Have you led a Control & Instrumentation engineering team on large-scale Oil & Gas, Chemical, Petrochemical or Refinery projects, with responsibility for budget, schedule, and resource planning? Do you have hands-on experience delivering DCS, PLC and SIS systems throughout the full project lifecycle, including FEED, detailed design, procurement, and commissioning? The Opportunity We are recruiting for an experienced Lead Control & Instrumentation Engineer to join a project delivery team based in Manchester, supporting a portfolio of major projects within the downstream Oil & Gas, Chemical, Petrochemical, Power, and Energy sectors.
This is a key leadership position requiring responsibility for technical delivery, budget management, resource planning, cost control, and the development of multidisciplinary project teams. The successful candidate will lead C&I engineering activities throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept through to detailed design and implementation.
Your duties and responsibilities will be- Lead and manage a team of Control & Instrumentation Engineers and Designers across both UK and international delivery centres.
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Develop, manage, and control C&I project budgets, monitoring expenditure and resource allocation.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance throughout all phases of project execution.
- Lead C&I input into proposals, studies, FEED, detailed design and project delivery activities.
- Coordinate closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated project execution.
- Produce, review and approve C&I engineering deliverables.
- Interface effectively with clients, project managers, vendors, and other key stakeholders.
- Support the development of technical standards, procedures, and best practices.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering team.
- Manage project schedules, forecasts, progress reporting, and resource planning activities.
You will have the following qualifications & experience:- Significant experience delivering Instrumentation & Control Engineering projects from concept through commissioning/start-up.
- Extensive background within the Chemical, Petrochemical, Oil & Gas, or Refining sectors.
- Strong experience working on UK-based projects and applying UK engineering standards.
- Proven experience leading engineering teams on medium to large capital projects.
- Demonstrable experience managing project budgets, schedules, resources, and deliverables.
- Strong understanding of engineering design safety, constructability, and project execution principles.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to lead interfaces between C&I and other engineering disciplines.
- Experience working within EPC, engineering consultancy, or contracting environments.
- Experience working with global engineering delivery teams.

- Specification, selection, and procurement of field instrumentation and analysers.
- Technical bid evaluations and supplier management.
- DCS, PLC and Safety Instrumented System (SIS) design and lifecycle management.
- Functional Safety principles and SIL assessments (TÜV Functional Safety qualification advantageous).
- Hazardous Area Instrumentation and ATEX compliance.
- Instrumentation and control requirements for mechanical packages.
- P&ID development and review.
- Control valve, flow measurement, and relief device sizing.
- Electrical protection methodologies.
- Design, specification and implementation of control systems.
- Engineering design tools and project execution methodologies.
