Job Description:
About RJI
RJI (RJ International) is an independent energy infrastructure advisory based in West Yorkshire. We act as Owner’s Engineer, Employer’s Agent and NEC Project Manager on battery energy storage (BESS) and generation projects across Great Britain, providing contract administration, commercial management, technical assurance and grid compliance management for asset owners, developers and funds.
We work closely with National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), the National Energy System Operator (NESO), Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs), alongside the contractors and equipment suppliers delivering each site. We are a small, close team where everyone’s work is visible and matters.
Purpose of the role
The Project Engineer is the electrical technical lead on our projects. You will check that what is designed is right, that what is built matches what was designed, and that each project meets its programme and grid compliance requirements. The role suits an electrically minded engineer at project engineer or assistant project manager level who wants broad exposure across HV, LV, AC and DC systems on live energy projects.
Key responsibilities
Technical and design review
- Review electrical design drawings, single line diagrams, protection, earthing and cabling designs against the specification and network operator requirements.
- Inspect installations on site against approved drawings, raise non conformances and defects, and verify close out.
- Review technical studies (such as load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, harmonics and earthing studies) and challenge assumptions where needed.
- Witness testing and commissioning of HV and LV AC systems, DC battery systems and power conversion equipment.
Grid connection and compliance
- Provide technical input to compliance with NGET, NESO, DNO and IDNO requirements, including data submissions and evidence.
- Respond to network operator technical queries and support projects through energisation and compliance sign off.
- Produce the monthly non conformance and defect reports for clients.
Project delivery
- Review contractor programmes, track progress against them and flag risks to programme early.
- Attend progress and technical meetings on site and online, and drive actions to close.
- Complete client reports and records in our CRM system accurately and on time.
- Provide technical assessment to support NEC contract administration, including early warnings and compensation events.
- Travel to project sites across Great Britain at least two to three days a week.
Person specification
Essential
- A degree, HND or HNC in electrical engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
- Experience in the ICP or power industry, working on HV and LV networks or connections.
- Sound understanding of HV and LV AC systems, including switchgear, transformers, protection, earthing and cabling.
- Understanding of DC systems such as battery storage, solar PV and inverters.
- Able to read and review electrical drawings and check installations against them.
- Able to understand construction programmes and technical studies.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationally at least two to three days a week.
- Flexible and diligent, with clear written communication and good reporting discipline.
Desirable
- Experience with NEC contracts (NEC3 or NEC4).
- Experience on BESS, solar or grid scale generation projects.
- Familiarity with Grid Code or G99 compliance processes.
- HV authorisation or switching experience.
- Membership of the IET, or working towards IEng or CEng.
- Experience with Fieldwire, Aconex or a similar construction management platform.
Personal qualities
You will be practical, thorough and confident in raising technical issues with contractors and clients. You will be comfortable working on your own on site and as part of a small team, and willing to adapt as project priorities change.
